FASTBACK MODEL 20 USER’S MANUAL 208714 - REVB00 15
TIPS FOR BEST BINDING RESULTS
VI
1) Even edges
Before binding a document, be sure that the pages are
even. Tap the document several times on the top of the
machine vigorously. The pages in your book will be just as
even as how you prepare them for binding.
2) Consider the grain
Keep the grain of the paper running parallel to the
binding (spine) edge of the document. All paper has a
grain — it consists of the fibers that make up the paper. If
the grain runs parallel to the long (11” or A4) side of the
sheet, the paper is “grain long. If the grain runs parallel
to the short side (” or A5) of the paper, it is “grain
short.
A sheet of paper will naturally flex more easily along
the direction of its grain. Try it and see. Hold a piece of
paper the long (11” or A4) way lightly in your fingertips
and gently bow the paper, allowing it to flex. Now try it
the other (” or A5) way to see the difference. (fig 12)
Most copy paper is grain long, so you should not have
any problems with the bind. Grain long paper will give
you the best bind. Occasionally you may find papers that
are grain short, so we recommend you test unfamiliar
papers before binding large numbers of documents.
3) Tip for tabs
Tabs can enhance a document’s functionality and
appearance, and certain tabs work very well. However,
before selecting tabs, we recommend you call your
Fastback® dealer for advice on the proper tabs to use.
Certain tabs do not work well in Fastback documents
– particularly, those with a plastic reinforcement along
the spine edge. We recommend testing all tabs before
binding large numbers of documents.
4) Cool down
After binding a document place it spine down in the
Cooling Rack for 2-3 minutes. (You should wait 5
minutes before using your book to allow the binding
adhesive to fully set.)
5) Recycling
Fastback documents are recyclable – in fact, they can be
recycled at any place you would recycle your magazines
and newspapers.
